Each month, Davis Head Start hosts family engagement activities, including FISH (Fathers Involved Shaping Head Start Children), to encourage parental involvement in early education.
As the male involvement/program specialist, Brett Lund has seen many events at Davis Head Start, but the "Superhero Celebration" stood out.
"The ‘Superhero Celebration’ honored the real heroes in the lives of our Head Start children ... their parents," Lund said.
Beyond the fun, the event served a deeper purpose. It reinforced the Conscious Discipline social-emotional learning program, helping families build a supportive "school family" at home and school.
"Head Start is a program that supports the whole family ... preparing children for kindergarten and educating parents on the importance of their role as their child’s first and best teacher," Lund said.
Excitement filled the air as families embraced the theme. Children and parents arrived in superhero and princess costumes, ready to dance, create and connect. A DJ played lively music, bubbles filled the air, and families enjoyed mask-making, glow sticks and photo ops. A family-style dinner reinforced Head Start’s mission: "The parent-child relationship is central to the work we do."
"We were very excited at the turnout to the event ... approximately 350 to 400 people attended," Lund said.
The event’s success was made possible by community partners, including Young Caring for Their Young, Young Kia, The Legacy Initiative, Heroic and DJ Youngheart – Uri Joseph. More than just fun, the event strengthened bonds, proving that true superheroes hold their child’s hand every step of the way.
