The lunar new year has begun, and students in the Davis School District took time to learn about its cultural significance in Chinese traditions.
Under the guidance of Stewart Elementary sixth grade teacher Pingli Ji, students practice the ancient art of calligraphy.
“I just think it’s important to know about other cultures,” sixth grade student Katelyn said. “And since we have a Chinese teacher and it’s Chinese New Year today, we want to celebrate it with her.”
Each grade level at Syracuse Elementary spent weeks learning traditional Chinese performances for their parents and classmates. Students and teachers say it’s not only fun but important to understand and embrace different cultures.
“You think of China as so far away, but really, once they are submerged into that language and that culture and all that we do here at the school, it makes that world a smaller place for them,” Second Grade Teacher Amy DeVries said.
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, lasts for 15 days.
