Dino-Mite Night activity

Recently, the third annual Dino-mite Night was held at Eccles Dinosaur Park, welcoming Head Start families for a special evening of connection, pizza and learning. This annual gathering serves as both an introduction to the program and an exciting way to get families engaged in the Head Start experience.

“It is our version of back-to-school nights,” said Family Enrichment Center’s Father/Family/Community Outreach Specialist, Brett Lund.  “It is an opportunity for staff to connect to our families in the program and families to connect to others outside their immediate class.”

The night served as a gateway to the social-emotional learning curriculum, Conscious Discipline with interactive booths. Conscious Discipline focuses on seven essential powers and skills for social-emotional health.

The event featured interactive booths and activities. Parents visited "power stations" to learn what their children practice in class, such as the power of Perception and the skill of Composure.

Staff demonstrated techniques like "STAR" (Smile, Take a deep breath, And Relax) and the balloon method, which children use in the classroom to stay calm under pressure, help parents guide children in managing emotions.

“This is a great opportunity for parents to learn that it all starts with them,” said Lund.

Another station focused on Attention and Assertiveness, teaching parents how to shift their focus from judgment to noticing behaviors. This skill helps parents foster healthier relationships by responding thoughtfully instead of reacting emotionally.

The core of Conscious Discipline is understanding brain function—recognizing when we’re reacting emotionally versus responding thoughtfully—helping build healthier relationships.

The event was both educational and fun, thanks to support from community partners like Eccles Dinosaur Park, Hungry Howie’s and Bountiful Food Pantry.

“We are also very blessed to have the best Head Start staff ever,” stated Lund. â€śThey give their heart and soul to this program and the families and children we serve.”

Dino-mite Night is just the beginning. Throughout the year, staff will continue to share ideas and strategies in classes and events, helping parents create emotionally safe environments where children can thrive.

With an average of 800 participants over the past three years, Dino-mite Night exemplifies the mission of "Building Futures Together," fostering unity and connection as one school family.
